Call to celebrate Karunanidhi’s birthday in a grand manner

CHENNAI: DMK general secretary and Finance Minister Anbazhagan on Monday called upon the party cadres to celebrate the 85th birthday of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in a grand manner as an antidote to his anguish.

He also announced that the general council of the party would meet on June 2, a day before the birthday, to discuss the organisational polls.

“With happiness writ on our face let us turn up in large numbers to greet him on his birthday,” Mr Anbazhagan said in a statement. On May 14 the Chief Minister had announced that he would not celebrate his birthday.

“His announcement shocked the party cadres and I am crestfallen. Though various functions and programmes are organised throughout the year, emotionally-surcharged cadres get a fillip only when they greet the leader on his birthday. It also gives an opportunity to the younger generation to know about the achievements of Kalaignar and the history of the DMK,” Mr Anbazhagan said.

Recalling the reasons cited by Mr Karunanidhi for not celebrating his birthday, Mr Anbazhagan said though the Sethusamudram project was getting delayed due to vicious people, it would certainly be implemented.

He said the Chief Minister, who succeeded in getting Tamil classical language status, would also witness the completion of the Sethusamduram project.

As regards the Chief Minister’s concern over terrorism, Mr Anbazhagan said leaders like Mr Karunanidhi should instil courage in people to face terrorism that had taken root in many countries.

Mr Anbazhagan also explained that betrayal of friends was nothing new to the Chief Minister who had faced betrayals from the days of self-respect movement. “All those who have read his memoirs Nenjukku Neethi would have come across many such incidents,” he said and added if the birthday was not celebrated, it would only please the betrayers.
