 Kattabomman festival concludes


GREAT LEADER: Artistes performing ‘oyilattam’ at Panchalankurichi.

Tuticorin: A two-day Veerapandia Kattabomman festival organised by the district administration at Panchalankurichi near here concluded on Saturday.

Inaugurating the festival on Friday, Collector R Palaniyandi recollected the heroic deeds of Veerapandia Kattabomman as a freedom fighter.

Later, he unveiled a huge portrait of Kattabomman at the function, which was held near the Kattabomman Memorial Fort constructed by the state Government in 1974.

 
    

He received torches brought as relay from different parts of the State to pay respect to Kattabomman.

Commemorating the occasion, special pujas were offered at Sri Devi Jakkammal Temple, hereditary goddess of Kattabomman, situated adjacent to the fort. Thousands of people witnessed the rituals.

The Collector gave away welfare assistance worth Rs.1.2 lakh earmarked under various government-sponsored schemes to 16 persons.

The Superintendent of Police, Deepak Damor Motibhai, the Project Officer of District Rural Development Agency, R Sankar, the District Tourism Officer, T. Chellapa, among others, were present.
