Millennium celebrations of Big Temple begin

 



Sept. 22: The millennium celebrations of the Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur commenced on Wednesday with mangala isai being played by the students of Thiruvaiyaru Government Music College and traditional folk dances being performed by artistes. Union minister of state for finance S.S. Palanimanickam and state cooperative minister Ko.Si. Mani kick started the celebrations by beating the drum at the function held at Karandhai Tamil Sangam Wednesday evening. Among others Tamil Nadu tourism secretary Irai Anbu, tourism department director A.C. Mohandas, and commissioner of art and culture P.A. Mani participated. The nadaswaram artistes played notes from MGR hits such as Oru Thai Makkal Naam Enbom and Neenga Nalla Irukkonum Naadu Munnera much to the cheers of the audience. Poikkal Kuthirai, Mayilattam, Maanattam and Karakattam were presented by Nadi Rao and his troupe. Various folk dances and vocal concerts were staged in the Big Temple premises, Sivaganga Garden, Raja Raja Cholan Manimandapam, Tholkappiar Square and Old Housing Unit.



 

 

 

 

In view of the millennium celebrations, the Big Temple has been brightly illuminated while the entire city had been decked up for the extravaganza. Chief minister M. Karuna-nidhi will participate in a seminar, ‘Contribution of Thanjavur to India’s Pride’, on September 24 and the valedictory function will be held in the Armed Police Ground on September 26.
