Convicts hanging put off on bus burning case

VELLORE: Even as all the three death convicts in the Dharmapuri bus burning case sent separate mercy pleas to the President, the State Government has put off the original execution date of October 8, till the President responds to the plea. But the government has not announced any fresh date. Following the ruling made by the Salem Court on September 21 that Nedunchezhiyan, Maadhu and Muniyappan would be executed at the Vellore Central Prison, where they have been lodged, this communication from the State has put a stop to all preparations for the hanging that would have taken place on Friday.

While some senior AIADMK functionaries who visited the convicts recently had returned with mercy pleas to the President as well as petitions requesting sentence reduction to the Supreme Court, the three convicts personally despatched mercy pleas to the President. These pleas were routed through the Prison Superintendent and the Director of Prisons to the Tamilnadu Government. The State, which forwarded the plea to the Centre, has now put on hold the original execution date. This order from the TN Government reached Collector C Rajendran on Wednesday.
