Case registered again unknown lankan navy person

Rameswaram (TN), Sep 23  Tamil Nadu Police have registered a case against 'unknown' Sri Lankan Naval personnel for allegedly assaulting fishermen of this island and robbing them of their fish catch in mid sea on Tuesday. This is the first time in the last two decades that a case has been registered against Sri Lankan Naval personnel though complaints about such attacks on the state fishermen had been made on numerous occasions, police said. The case was filed by Mandapam Marine Police on a complaint from H Keba, one of the seven fishermen injured in the incident that occurred when they were fishing in Indian waters between Danushkodi and Katchatheevu, an islet ceded by India to Sri Lanka in 1974, police said.

The Sri Lankan Naval personnel had been charged under Indian Penal Code sections 498 (unlawful assembly), 392 (robbery), 323 (causing simple injury) and 427 (damaging property), DSP Thyagarajan said. Officials said the complaint would be forwarded to the government for further action. Incidents of attacks on fishermen allegedly by Sri Lankan Naval personnel had been a major issue in the state with political parties urging the Centre to issue a stern warning to the neighbouring country to desist from such acts. The Central government, however, has been maintaining it would protect the fishermen as long as they do not stray into the Lankan waters, which has huge fish wealth
