Canadian Tamil Congress -
Deliberately Targeted

The Toronto Police
Intelligence Unit has taken over the
investigation into a break-in at the Canadian
Tamil Congress. A spokesperson for the group
said someone broke into their Toronto office
sometime Saturday night, ransacked the premises
and stole a computer. The congress initially
said the computer contained sensitive
information — including birth certificates,
names and contact information — for hundreds of
Tamil migrants who arrived in Canada last month.
But congress members now say there wasn't as
much sensitive information on the computer as
was previously thought, and all information was
encrypted. But congress spokesman David
Poopalapillai said the organization is not
taking the break-in lightly. He believes the
office was deliberately targeted by someone
seeking sensitive information on Tamil migrants.
"Someone clearly don't want us [to do] what we
are doing and they are sending a very strong
message, you know, 'We are after you,'" he said.
"They're trying to silence us and they're trying
to do some damage for the work we do. [But] we
won't be silenced."

Poopalapillai
said members of the organization are in the
process of notifying affected families, as well
as increasing security at their office. The 492
migrants arrived in British Columbia aboard the
MV Sun Sea Aug 13. Detention reviews for the 380
men, 63 women and 49 children are underway in
Vancouver. Their identities are subject to a
publication ban ordered by the Immigration and
Refugee Board..
