Constituencies for Tamilnadu Upper House
identified

CHENNAI: In a major step to
revive the upper house in TN, the Centre has
notified the delimitation of constituencies that
will elect members of the legislative council.
Under the delimitation plan, ordered by
President Pratibha Patil in consultation with
the Election Commission, the state will have 7
constituencies each for graduates and teachers,
and 26 seats for local bodies' representatives.
Chennai,Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts
will form the Chennai graduates' constituency.
The other seats are: TN North (comprising
Vellore, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai
districts), TN North Central (Salem,
Namakkal,Cuddalore), TN West (Erode, Nilgiris,
Coimbatore, Tirupur, Karur), TN East Central (Tiruchi,
Perambalur, Ariya-lur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur,
Thanjavur), TN South Central (Dindigul,
Pudukottai, Sivaganga, Madurai, Raman-athapuram),
TN South (Theni, Virudhunagar, Tuticorin,
Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari). Each constituency
will send a member to the council.

The scheme is the same for the 7
teachers' seats– Chennai, TN North, TN North
Central, TN West, TN East Central, TN South
Central and TN South. Chennai local bodies
will have two seats, while other districts
together will elect 23 members. Under the plan,
local bodies in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram,
Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Vill-upuram, Dharmapuri,
Krishnagiri, Salem, Erode, Tirupur, Madurai,
Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Virudhunagar, Tuticorin,
Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari will have one local
authorities' constituency each. Cuddalore and
Ariyalur together will have one representative.
Also clubbed are Namakkal and Karur, Coimbatore
and Nilgiris, Dindigul and Theni, Tiruchi and
Perambalur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur,
Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram.
