Illayaraja honoured with Padma Bhushan

At a glittering ceremony at
Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, President
Pratibha Patil honored the nation's finest
talent with the Padma awards. Illayaraja, the
celebrated music composer of over 900 Indian
films, was conferred with the Padma Bhushan
award for his contribution to art in India and
abroad. The evergreen beauty of Indian
cinema, Rekha, was awarded the Padma Shri for
her contribution to the Indian film industry.
She acted in more than 180 films in her career
that has spanned over 40 years. Actor Saif
Ali Khan received the Padma Shri award for his
contribution to the Indian film industry. His
career spanned almost two decades. Oscar
winning sound designer Resul Pookutty was
conferred with the Padma Shri award for his
contribution to sound mixing in the Indian film
industry and abroad. Prominent south
Indian theatre personality Arundhati Nag
received the Padma Shri for her involvement with
theatre for over 25 years. Olympian boxer
Vijender Singh was conferred with the Padma Shri
award for his contribution to the field of
sports.

And motor racing driver Narain
Karthikeyan too recieved the Padma Shri.
Karthikeyan has been an active formula one racer
and shot to prominence in a short period of 5
years. And, famous cricket coach Ramakant
Achrekar was conferred the Padma Shri for his
immense contribution to cricket. The
septuaganarian's most famous and successful
pupil is Sachin Tendulkar.
