NDTV moves High Court to interview Nalini

CHENNAI: A New Delhi-based
television channel has filed a writ petition in
the Madras High Court seeking to quash an order
of the Superintendent of the Special Prison for
Women, Vellore, denying permission to interview
Nalini, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi
assassination case. The channel sought a
direction to prison authorities to permit the
channel to interview her and telecast it.

In its petition, New Delhi Television
Ltd, said media, both print and visual, had aired the
views of political leaders and the general public with
regard to the premature release of Nalini. However,
Nalini had not had the opportunity to express her
response. When the channel sought permission to
interview her, it was refused by an order dated February
8 without assigning any valid reason beyond stating that
jail rules permitted an interview only with relatives,
friends and legal advisers. Nalini, in a telegram
to her advocate, informed him that she had sent a
telegram to the High Court stating that she had not
given consent to any media [for an interview].
