PSG CAS students, teachers protest Unitary
private University

COIMBATORE: Students of the aided
courses of PSG College of Arts and Science (PSG
CAS) continued their stir on Monday protesting
against the government's move to convert the PSG
Institutions into a private unitary university.
Nearly 300 students, including teachers, staged
a sit-in strike for two hours raising slogans
urging the government to withdraw the proposal.
They were also protesting against the suspension
of classes by the college management till
December 14. N. Thirugnanasambandam, President,
Association of University Teachers, PSG CAS
unit, said it was a peaceful protest. “Students
and teachers held a token strike after which the
former went to the Collectorate to submit a
memorandum to the District Collector.” He added
that students were unhappy over the college
remaining closed for over a week and demanded
that they be informed of the real reason behind
the management decision.

K.M. Chinnadurai, Principal
in-charge of the college, met the protesting
students and teachers and urged them to call off
the protest. He told them that the college was
closed “to avoid law and order problems”.
Students, in the memorandum, had urged the Chief
Minister “to intervene to make the Higher
Education Department drop the move to convert
PSG Institutions into a unitary university.”
