TGTE announces
its first cabinet

New York, NY November 3, 2010
The Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE)
announced today that it had formed its first
cabinet. The reaction, at least from the
American group Tamils for Obama, was swift and
positive. “We are pleased,” said a spokesman for
Tamils for Obama. “It shows a number of things,
all of which we think are good. First, it shows
us that TGTE is not going to be just a
ceremonial organization. It is a solemn group
that takes their duties seriously. We are
impressed with the quality of people who have
volunteered for and been appointed to the TGTE’s
cabinet. “Second, it shows us that TGTE is going
to be a stable and enduring organization. This
will be an institution that connects diaspora
Tamils who are scattered all over the world to
each other and to the Tamils in Ceylon. “Third,
it demonstrates that this group has a democratic
mandate from the people it claims to represent.
The MPs were elected by diaspora Tamils. The MPs
selected a prime minister, who appointed cabinet
members. That’s how it is done by Parliamentary
governments all over the world. We think that
Tamils everywhere should be proud of our newly
born democratic government, which we hope will
be the beginning of a justly ruled, democratic
Tamil Eelam. That is our dream. “We hope and
expect that someday the TGTE leaders will meet
with the Obama administration in Washington. We
at Tamils for Obama will work hard to make this
happen. “We have heard from despairing Tamils in
Sri Lanka who have told us that their spirits
are raised by this organization that they
believe will be a voice for them to tell their
story to the rest of the world. That raises our
spirits too,” said the Tamils for Obama
spokesman. The TGTE announcement included
details about the ministers and their deputies.

Tamils for Obama is a politically active
association of Tamil Americans. The group
believes that the ultimate solution to ethnic
strife in Sri Lanka will necessarily include
some form of political separation of Sri Lankan
Tamils from the government dominated by the
majority Singhalese. Tamils for Obama supports
peaceful measures that if believes advance this
goal of a political solution to Sri Lanka's
ethnic problems. Tamils are an ethnic group
living mainly in the northeast of Sri Lanka and
southern India. During the final weeks of the
recent civil war, the Sri Lankan government
killed about 1,000 Tamil civilians per day,
according to the United Nations, and about
40,000 in 2009. The Tamil are a population in
Sri Lanka has borne the brunt of a civil war
they regard as genocide. One-third of the Tamil
population has fled the island and formed a
substantial diaspora overseas. Tamils for Obama
is comprised of Tamils who have settled in the
U.S. or who were born in the U.S. To contact the
