TN Government rejects plea for premature release
by Nalini

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government on Monday
rejected the plea for premature release of
Nalini Sriharan, former Prime Minister Rajiv
Gandhi's suspected assassin. Nalini has been in
prison for 19 years and is now undergoing life
imprisonment in the Vellore Central Jail. She
had originally been sentenced to death. But that
was reduced to a life sentence after Sonia
Gandhi intervened and reasoned that Nalini had a
baby daughter(Megha)
.
On March 10,2010, a two-judge bench of the HC,
comprising Justice Elipe Dharma Rao and Justice
K.K. Sasidharan asked TN government to submit
their report about this case on next day. The TN
government on March 11 told the court that it
would take the final decision on Nalini's
premature release in two weeks as they needed
time to study it. The decision was taken after
considering the recommendations of the Prison
Advisory Board(PAB) which was headed by the
Vellore district collector C Rajendran. The PAB
furnished several grounds for rejecting Nalini's
plea including her refusal to accept/apologize
her role in the assassination. |
