TNSTC buses cover 95 lk km daily

Tirunelveli (TN), Oct 23
With the introduction of several new routes
during the present DMK regime, state-owned
transport corporations' buses in Tamil Nadu
covered a distance of 95 lakh km daily as
against 64 lakh km during the previous AIADMK
rule, state Transport Minister K N Nehru said
today. Similarly, the number of passengers
carried by the buses daily had also gone up to
2.10 crore compared to 1.62 crore during the
previous regime, he said here inaugurating the
new Tirunelveli division of Tamil Nadu State
Transport Corporation (TNSTC) carved out from
Madurai division. He said during the last
four-and-half years of DMK rule, a total of
20,500 buses were added to the rollinng stock
while 45,000 personnel have been added to the
workforce. Despite the corporations incurring a
daily loss of Rs 2.17 crore, the government had
been introducing new buses and routes without
increasing bus fare, he said. Referring to the
demand of transport corporation employees for
wage hike, he said the government would consider
it positively.
