Tamil Language Award for Finnish Indologist


Chennai, Apr 3  Finnish Indologist Asko Parpola, Professor Emeritus of Indology and South Asian Studies in Helsinki University, has been selected for the Kalaignar M Karunanidhi Classical Tamil Language Award for 2009. The award has been instituted by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil Language from Rs one crore donated by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to create an endowment to award Tamil scholars.
 

 

The prize would carry a purse of Rs 10 lakh, a citation and a shield and would be presented to Parpola at the Classical World Tamil Conference in Coimbatore in June, an official statement said today. Parpola specializes in the Indus script and has made significant contributions in the field of deciphering it.
