Time to clear violations in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: After the elections, it is now a full-scale offensive against concrete structures flouting building norms and marring the city landscape. On Day three of its crackdown, the Coimbatore corporation sealed a big textile shop, four commercial complexes, evicted workers from four construction sites and also disconnected water supply to six commercial centers across the city. Corporation officials have warned two commercial complexes to immediately restore parking space as per the approved building plan. Sans political interference, in just three days, the corporation has either sealed or halted construction of 32 buildings. "A major commercial textile outlet in Saibaba colony was sealed on Wednesday for multiple violations. The water supply has also been disconnected to six other centers," said M Soundarrajan, chief town planning officer, Coimbatore corporation. All key violating buildings dotting busy localities, including Ram Nagar, Gandhipuram and Saibaba Colony, came under the scanner.

On the busy Dr Nanjappa road, a major commercial centre, which housed mansions and shops, was shut. The mansion with 20 rooms was sealed and the inmates asked to vacate. Besides, 20 shops in the complex owned by a private real estate firm were also sealed. Another commercial complex, which had got approval only for a residential building was locked and sealed at Kattur. The builders had also violated the parking space and setback norms. "The initial approval was for residential building on 3000 square feet but they had illegally erected a commercial complex with a ground floor and three additional floors covering more than 10,500 square feet, violating all norms," said S Ravichandran, assistant town planning officer, Coimbatore corporation. "Most of these buildings don't have parking space and the occupants themselves will have to park their vehicles on the street, which increases congestion in the city," Soundarrajan added. The corporation has prepared a detailed list of defaulters and will crack the whip on all these major violators.
