Journalist Tissainayagam wins
British press
award -
'International
journalist of the year'

Tissainayagam, Srilankan Tamil journalist has
been chosen to be the 'International journalist
of the year' which is one of the 26 prestigious
awards of British press awards. Other nominees
were from various countries around the world
like Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Eritrea, Azerbaijan and
Burma. JS Tissainayagam was arrested under
terrorist laws in 2008 and was also sentenced to
20 years in jail by the government of Srilanka.
He was released on bail by January.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) honoured
Tissainayagam with its 2009 International Press Freedom
Awards at a ceremony in November 2009.Tissainayagam also
won the coveted Peter Mackler Award for courageous and
ethical journalism at a ceremony at the National Press
Club in US in October 2009.
