Videocon launches mobile services in Tamilnadu

Chennai : Videocon Telecommunications Limited on
Thursday launched GSM mobile services in
Chennai, Tamil Nadu.It will roll out covering
100 cities over the next 100 days targeting key
cities across Punjab, Haryana, Kerala, Madhya
Pradesh and Gujarat. Prominent cities like
Lucknow, Meerut, Allahabad, Varanasi, Pune,
Nagpur, Aurangabad, Hyderabad and Vishakhapatnam
are also included in this roll out. The Chairman
of Videocon group, Mr Venugopal Dhoot said that
Videocon would invest Rs 14,000 crore in its
mobile telecom business in the next three years.
It has become the 14th operator in the Indian
mobile services market.

He also said that for this venture, a banking consortium
led by State Bank of India (SBI) has agreed to lend
Rs.7,000 crore and remaining funds will be acquired from
other sources. To start with the company has around
70,000 base stations comprising of owned and shared
ones. The GSM Prepaid Sim-Kit of Videocon Mobile
Services will be available from 27th March 2010 across
Chennai and it costs Rs.49 with the talk-time of Rs 5.
