I am no astrologer - Actor Vijay

Actor Vijay seems to have moved on from the troubles that plagued his Pongal release. Now, the actor is looking forward to his summer release Velayudham in which he plays a larger-than-life superhero and messiah of the downtrodden. Says Vijay, "Velayudham, which is going to be a mass entertainer directed by Raja, has Hansika and Genelia playing my heroines. The reason why I take on villains is sensible and convincing, which I feel will be the highlight of the film." The film is rumoured to be a remake of Nagarjuna's Telugu film Azad in which the hero cleans up the society of the scums of the earth.  Meanwhile, it's quite clear that Vijay will ultimately join politics. For the last three years, he has been building his fan base, expanding his network, making the right noises (his one-day token fast on the Sri Lankan issue is just one example) and launching his own flag. His father S A Chandrasekhar has been working overtime behind the scenes to convert Vijay's larger-than-life screen image and give him a 'new youth icon' tag. SAC has also been telling the local media that "Vijay wants to serve the people and will enter politics at the right time, maybe when he's 40."  There has been an undercurrent of support for Vijay within the industry and among the youth. Recently, he met up with his competitor Ajith (who is also being urged by his fans to join politics) and bonded with him, which has also warmed the cockles of opposition parties in the state. A source close to the star said, "In his new Pongal film, what worked big with the audiences was the twist in the climax. Similarly, there will be a major twist in the tale closer to the assembly elections."

The actor believes that certain people who couldn't stomach his success were behind the recent troubles that plagued his last release, which has now been declared as a hit by the trade. "Everyone knows that pressures and problems during release are very common to all films. However, in my case, some vested interests were trying their best to see that my film did not release for Pongal."  But all that is now history as the film has been appreciated by the family audiences too. Adds Vijay, "I have to thank my fans, who patiently waited outside my house, office, lab and theatres to find out the release time. They stood with me during a very difficult time in my life and that's given me immense confidence to go ahead." When quizzed about rumors making the rounds that he is waiting to join politics, the actor shoots back and says, "About 15 years ago, when I entered the industry, all that I wanted was to play the hero's role. I never expected that I will become a popular star. Now, I want to do something for the poor and the needy through my fan clubs. Currently, my career as an actor is going in the right direction. But, I cannot say where my social work will ultimately take me as I'm no astrologer. One thing is clear — what has to happen will happen; nobody can stop it."
